Communications and Digital Technologies on 2026 edition of Government Technology Conference
The 2026 edition of the Government Technology Conference (GovTech) is fast approaching. GovTech is the brainchild of the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), in collaboration with its shareholder, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT).
GovTech is one of SITA’s flagship programmes, bringing all our stakeholders and partners under one roof, including through a virtual platform, to engage in meaningful conversations about emerging digital technologies and solutions to modernise and drive digital transformation in South Africa.
This conference provides an inclusive platform bringing together industry leaders, government officials, students and young people, ICT and solutions experts, entrepreneurs, innovators, and stakeholders from across society to engage, exchange knowledge, and explore the transformative power of digital technologies. From farmers and healthcare workers to educators, tourism practitioners, small businesses, and ordinary citizens, the conference showcases how innovation and technology can improve lives, strengthen services, create opportunities, and drive economic growth. It highlights that digital transformation is not only an ICT agenda, but an opportunity for every citizen and every sector.
This year marks 20 years since the inception of GovTech, a significant milestone that we celebrate while recognising that there is still much more to be done. As the world continues to evolve digitally, so too must our approach to technology, innovation and digital transformation. GovTech’s 20-year journey is a testament to progress, but it also reminds us of the work that lies ahead in building a more connected, inclusive and digitally empowered society.
|This year’s theme, “Building Towards Digital Sovereignty: South Africa as Architect of its Digital Destiny for Citizens,” underscores South Africa’s commitment to building a secure, inclusive and resilient digital future in which the country has greater capacity to develop, govern and leverage its own digital capabilities, infrastructure, data and technologies. Digital sovereignty is about strengthening our ability to make strategic technology decisions in the national interest, while fostering innovation, developing local skills and capabilities, supporting home-grown solutions, and building trusted partnerships that advance South Africa’s digital transformation agenda.
Through collaboration between government, industry, academia and other stakeholders, GovTech 2026 seeks to accelerate the development of a digitally sovereign South Africa that is competitive, secure and able to participate meaningfully in the global digital economy. As government, we believe that one of the most fundamental pillars of a digital South Africa is access to secure and protected connectivity for all, irrespective of one’s geographical location or economic circumstances. The deliberations taking place at GovTech must help us find more solutions to this challenge.
Achieving sovereign digital transformation will require partnerships among a variety of stakeholders. This is a journey in which we are collectively enjoined, and one in which we succeed together. GovTech 2026 will be hosted by the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality at the Durban International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) from 21–23 September 2026.
